Kenneth "Kenny" Garland Obituary

Kenneth "Kenny" A. Garland, 97 of 625 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, Indiana and formerly of the Argos community died on August 6, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Miller's Merry Manor Assisted Living apartments where he passed peacefully in his sleep.

Kenny was born on April 27, 1919 in Culver, Indiana to William and Gladys (Humes) Garland.
He has lived in the Marshall County since 1941, coming from the Knox, Stark County community.
On August 24, 1940 in Plymouth, Indiana he married Marjorie Elizabeth (McDonald) Garland and together they shared 67 years with each other. She preceded him on February 3, 2008.

Kenny was a Farmer and Welder in the Tippecanoe, Indiana community, but also worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad as a Foreman from Chicago, Illinois to Bellview, Ohio. He retired in 1980 from the Railroad.    

Kenny served his country in the United States Marine Corp in the 5th Marine Division as an Auto Rifleman Specialist from November 2, 1944 to May 9, 1946 when he received his Honorable Discharge. The 5th Marine Division was a United States Marine Corps infantry division which was activated on November 11, 1943 at Camp Pendleton, California during World War II. The 5th Division saw its first combat action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 where it sustained the highest number of casualties of the three Marine divisions of the V Amphibious Corps. The 5th Division was to be part of the planned invasion of the Japan homeland before Japan surrendered. Assault troops of the 5th Division were included in the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to the V Amphibious Corps for extraordinary heroism on Iwo Jima from February 19 to 28, 1945. The 5th Division was deactivated on February 5, 1946.
He was a member of the Argos American Legion Post#68, Argos, Indiana.

Kenny is survived by his Daughters – Carolyn Clingenpeel and husband Joseph of Warsaw, Indiana; and Nancy Kinsey and husband Gary of Tippecanoe, Indiana.

Sister – Virginia Bernero of Culver, Indiana
Brother – Victor Garland of Knox, Indiana

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Wife – Marjorie Garland, Son – Russell A. Garland, Grandson – Craig Garland, 4 sisters and 1 Brother

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday August 9, 2016 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana.  
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday August 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana with Rev. Larry Kreft of Grace Outreach Fellowship, Tippecanoe, Indiana.
Burial will follow at the Burr Oak Cemetery, Culver, Indiana with the United States Marine Corp Honor Guard and the Argos American Legion Post#68 Honor Guard .
