Donald L. Mahoney, 80 of Juniper Road, Argos, Indiana died on June 8, 2016 at 1:30 a.m. at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana following a brief illness.
Born on June 23, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri to A. Waite Mahoney and Mildred Louise (Flood) Mahoney, he moved to Argos, Indiana, in 1937 where he received FFA State Star Farmer in 1951 and graduated valedictorian from Argos High School in 1952. He studied botany, mathematics and German at Indiana University, where he was a secretary of Acacia Fraternity and received his A.B. in 1956. He continued his education at Purdue where he received his M.S. in genetics and statistics in 1958.
He worked as Scientific Intelligence Officer at the Central Intelligence Agency in McLean, Virginia. While there he attended national and international scientific meetings including presenting a paper at the International Congress of Genetics in The Hague, Netherlands.
Donald Mahoney and Nancy L. Watson were wed on January 14, 1966 in Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania.
In 1965 he moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, to work with the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction (MPATI), a six-state not-for-profit organization that designed, developed, produced and distributed educational materials nationwide. During that time he was a committee chairman in the White House Conference on Children and was a consultant to the national 4-H Board.
He moved to Indianapolis in 1973 where he served as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 73. He became a member of the 500 Earth Sciences Club of Indianapolis, serving two terms as president and more than 30 years as show chairman. He was elected to the MSD of Washington Township School Board and served as president. He trained in financial planning, earning the CLU and ChFC designations and became a self-employed financial planner as Mahoney Financial.
He has lived in the Argos community since 2003, and attends the Argos United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and chaired or served on many committees. He was a certified United Methodist lay speaker and a member of the Argos Community School Board, Argos Planning Commission and Marshall County Economic Development Commission Board. In 2011 he received the award for Argos High School Alumnus of the Year. He was president and board member of Beach Island Resort Lessees Association in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Don enjoyed traveling, and he and Nancy have been to all 50 states, the Caribbean, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. They have been on mission trips to Texas and Louisiana.
Don is survived by his wife, Nancy Mahoney of Argos, Indiana; his daughters Barb Mahoney of Indianapolis, Indiana and Beverly Mohler and husband Thomas of Plano, Texas; his sons Duncan Mahoney of Los Angeles, California, and Alan Mahoney and wife Amber of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England; and grandchildren Bailey Middaugh, Rachel Middaugh, and Emmalee Mohler.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas Mahoney and James Mahoney and grandson Brennan Mohler.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday June 10, 2016 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Argos United Methodist Church, 570 N. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana, with Rev. Heather Foley of the Argos United Methodist Church.
